Periodontics is the study of the specialized system of hard and soft tissues, which supports the teeth and maintains their position in the jaw. This apparatus, known as the periodontium, has some very important functions: it firmly fixes the teeth to the jaws, acts as a shock absorber during the bite and chewing and helps to prevent tooth damage from excessive forces. It also allows to keep them in a stable position inside the jaws, so that they can work together during chewing.
